The Miracle of Guadalupe
In 1531, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, a humble Aztec peasant who had converted to Catholicism, on the hill of Tepeyac near Mexico City. She asked him to tell the bishop to build a church on that site.
When the bishop demanded a sign, Our Lady instructed Juan Diego to gather roses growing miraculously in winter on the barren hill. When Juan Diego opened his tilma (cloak) to show the roses to the bishop, they discovered an even greater miracle: the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe had been miraculously imprinted on the fabric.
This sacred image, which still exists today nearly 500 years later (the fabric should have decomposed long ago), shows:
- Mary as a pregnant woman (protecting the unborn)
- Standing on a crescent moon
- Clothed with the sun
- Wearing Aztec symbols of royalty and divinity
- Her eyes reflecting the witnesses present at the miracle
The tilma of Juan Diego remains on display at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, where millions of pilgrims visit each year. The miraculous image led to the conversion of eight million indigenous people in just seven years.
