Why Pray the St. Thomas Aquinas Novena in January?

January is a time of new beginnings, making it perfect for committing to deeper Eucharistic devotion. The Church celebrates the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas on January 28th, and this novena concludes just one day before, preparing our hearts to honor this great Doctor of the Church.

By praying together in January 2026, we:

  • Begin the new year with spiritual focus on the greatest gift we have: the Eucharist
  • Prepare for the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas (January 28th)
  • Unite our prayers with Catholics worldwide seeking the same grace
  • Invoke the Angelic Doctor’s intercession during the heart of his feast day celebrations

About St. Thomas Aquinas

Born in Italy in 1225, Thomas was gifted with an unparalleled intellect. He sought to enter the Dominican Order, but his family stopped him for some time by capturing him and holding him in their castle.

During that imprisonment, they sent in a prostitute to tempt him to sin, but he drove her out, and angels came to him. Thomas was given a special grace of not being tempted against purity again in his life. For those interested in growing in purity, the Angelic Warfare Confraternity was established by the Dominicans through the graces given to St. Thomas.

Thomas went on to enter the Dominican Order, become a professor and theologian, writing the Summa Theologiae, the greatest work on faith and reason ever made. He is the patron of Catholic colleges and schools and is sought out by students for help in their studies.

St. Thomas and the Eucharist

St. Thomas Aquinas had a profound devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. Pope Urban IV commissioned him to compose the liturgical texts for the newly established Feast of Corpus Christi. The hymns he wrote, including Pange Lingua, Tantum Ergo, O Salutaris Hostia, and Panis Angelicus, remain some of the most beloved Eucharistic hymns in the Church.

Thomas himself said:

“God Himself is the rule and mode of virtue… We can certainly never believe, trust or love God more than, or even as much as, we should. Extravagance is impossible.”

His writings on the Eucharist in the Summa Theologiae remain the definitive theological treatment of this great mystery. When we pray this novena for an increase in Eucharistic devotion, we ask St. Thomas to obtain for us some measure of the love he had for Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.
