St. Ephrem the Syrian Novena
St. Ephrem the Syrian (c. 306-373) was a deacon of Nisibis and then of Edessa who never accepted the priesthood and never stopped writing. He saw that the heretics of his day were winning people with catchy songs, so he wrote better ones, hundreds of them, and trained choirs of women to sing them in church. Over four hundred of his hymns survive, and the Syriac churches call him the Harp of the Holy Spirit. He died of plague caught while carrying relief to the famine-stricken of Edessa, and in 1920 he was declared a Doctor of the Church, the only one who wrote in Syriac. Pray this novena for repentance, humility, and the favor you most need.
