Patron saint of mothers and widows, parents who have lost a child, and those who long for children

St. Felicitas of Rome Novena

St. Felicitas of Rome was a noble Christian widow whose seven sons were martyred one by one before her eyes, after which she too gave her life for Christ around the year 165. A model of faith stronger than a mother’s grief, she is patroness of mothers, widows, and parents who have lost a child. Pray this novena for courage in the faith, strength in suffering, and the favor you most need.

Day 1

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Amen.

O glorious Saint Felicitas, holy widow and valiant mother of martyrs, you loved Christ above your own life and above the lives of your children, whom you offered to God with a heart both broken and unconquered. When the enemies of the faith sought to move you by flattery and by fear, you stood firm, for the Holy Spirit dwelt within you, and you strengthened your seven sons to be faithful even unto death.

Look with compassion upon us who honor your memory, and obtain for us a share in your courage and your love. Teach us to prize the friendship of God above every earthly comfort, to bear our sorrows with faith, and never to deny our Lord out of weakness or human fear. Watch over all mothers and fathers, and be near to those who grieve the loss of a child, that they may find in you a sure and gentle intercessor before the throne of God.

Confident in your powerful intercession, we lay before you the particular favor we now ask through your prayers.

(mention request here…)

Obtain this for us, dear Saint Felicitas, if it be for the greater glory of God and the good of our souls, and above all obtain for us the grace to remain faithful to Christ to the very end, that we may one day rejoice with you and your holy sons in the kingdom of heaven.

Amen.

O God, who gave to Saint Felicitas and her seven sons the grace to confess your name unto death, grant that we, who venerate their constancy, may be strengthened by their example and helped by their prayers, to love you above all things and to remain faithful in every trial. Through Christ our Lord.
