St. Lorenzo Ruiz Novena
St. Lorenzo Ruiz (c. 1600-1637) was a married layman of Binondo in Manila, a church clerk and calligrapher with a wife and three children, who in 1636 fled a murder charge he almost certainly did not deserve and took ship with a band of Dominican missionaries. Only at sea did he learn they were bound for Japan, where Christianity meant death, and he chose to stay with them. Tortured at Nagasaki and hung upside down in the pit, he answered his judges that had he a thousand lives he would offer them all to God. He is the first Filipino saint.
