St. Marguerite d'Youville Novena
St. Marguerite d’Youville (1701-1771) knew poverty from the age of seven, when her father died. She married a charming man who sold brandy illegally to the native peoples, neglected her, and left her at twenty-nine a widow with debts and two surviving children of six. She paid off the debts running a small shop, took the poor into her own house, and with a few companions founded the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, mocked in the streets as the Grey Nuns. She rebuilt the bankrupt General Hospital and turned away no one: the old, the sick, abandoned infants, native people, and wounded soldiers of both armies. Pray this novena for troubled marriages, for widows, for good stewardship, and for the favor you most need.
