St. Peter Claver Novena
St. Peter Claver (1580-1654) was a Spanish Jesuit who gave forty years to the enslaved Africans landed at Cartagena, then the chief slave market of the New World. He met every ship as it came in, carrying food, medicine, and interpreters, and went down into the holds where no one else would go. At his final vows he signed himself the slave of the Africans forever, and he baptized some three hundred thousand souls. He died neglected and half forgotten, and the city that had scorned him buried him as a saint. Pray this novena for the enslaved and the trafficked, for missionaries, for the healing of racial division, and for the favor you most need.
