St. Veronica Novena
St. Veronica is the woman who, as Jesus carried His Cross to Calvary, stepped out from the crowd to wipe the blood and sweat from His face with her veil, and found His image left upon the cloth. She is not named in the Gospels, but her act of courage and mercy has been honoured by Christians for more than a thousand years, and every Catholic who prays the Way of the Cross meets her at the Sixth Station. Her name has long been linked with vera icon, the true image. Pray this novena for courage to show mercy when others look away, for devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus, for all who suffer, and for the favor you most need.

O Saint Veronica, when the Son of God went up to Calvary bearing His Cross, disfigured with blood and sweat and spittle, mocked by the crowd and abandoned by His friends, you alone stepped forward. You did not count the danger or care what the soldiers would do, but with your own veil you wiped the Holy Face of Jesus, and He, in return, left upon it the image of His face.
Obtain for us, we beg you, a share of your courage and your compassion. When Christ comes to us in the poor, the sick, the despised and the suffering, let us not stand back in the crowd or turn away our eyes, but go to Him with whatever small comfort we have to offer.
Imprint the image of His Holy Face upon our hearts, as it was imprinted on your veil, that we may never forget how much He suffered for us, and may make reparation for the insults He still receives. Help us to see His face in every person who suffers, and to show His face to others by our charity.
