Venerable Augustus Tolton Novena
Venerable Augustus Tolton (1854-1897) was born into slavery in Missouri and carried across the Mississippi to freedom by his mother while the Civil War raged. He worked in a tobacco factory as a boy, was taught by a priest who defied his own parishioners to admit him to school, and when no seminary in the United States would accept a Black man, he was sent to Rome. Ordained in 1886, he expected Africa and was sent home instead. He built St. Monica’s in Chicago for Black Catholics and died worn out at forty-three. Pray this novena for racial healing and reconciliation, for vocations, for those who persevere under prejudice, and for the favor you most need.
