St Benedict of Nursia was born in Umbria, Italy around AD 480. He became the father of Western Monasticism and founder of the Benedictine Order, who motto is ora et labora–prayer and work.

He was sought out by thousands throughout his life for his holiness and wisdom.

He composed the Rule which the Benedictine monks followed. His Order preserved the civilizational knowledge as the Roman Empire crumbled before the barbarian tribes.
