Blessed Alberto Marvelli Novena
Blessed Alberto Marvelli (1918-1946) was an Italian engineer who died at twenty-eight, struck by a lorry as he cycled to a political meeting. Formed by the Salesians and by daily Mass, he led Catholic Action in Rimini, dug the wounded out of the rubble when the bombs fell, forced open railway carriages sealed for the deportation camps, and came home again and again without his shoes, his coat, or his bicycle, having given them to someone poorer. After the war he took charge of housing for the bombed-out and entered public life to serve them. You were an engineer, and you gave your learning to the poor. You went into a bombed and burning city that others were fleeing, carried out the wounded on your own back, and broke open the sealed carriages to set the prisoners free. You came home without your shoes and without your bicycle because another needed them more, for you had understood that every poor person is Jesus, and that every act of charity is an act of love towards him.
Teach us, we beg you, to see our Lord in the person standing in front of us, and to give not only from our surplus but from what we would rather keep. Bless all engineers and all who build, all young men and women beginning their working life, and all who enter public service and politics, that they may seek the good of the people entrusted to them and keep their hands clean.
