St. Catherine of Genoa Novena
St. Catherine of Genoa (1447-1510) endured ten unhappy years in an arranged marriage to an unfaithful husband who squandered their fortune, until on a March day in 1473, kneeling for confession, she was struck by the pure love of God and never turned back. She gave the rest of her life to the incurables of the Pammatone hospital, stayed at her post through two plagues, won her husband back to God, and set down in her Treatise on Purgatory the teaching that has shaped the Church’s understanding of that cleansing fire ever since. Pray this novena for difficult and childless marriages, for wives who have been betrayed, for the sick and those who nurse them, for the holy souls, and for the favor you most need.
