St. Joseph Calasanz Novena
St. Joseph Calasanz (1557-1648) was a Spanish nobleman and Doctor of Laws who gave up a promising career in the Church to gather the ragged children of Rome off the streets. In 1597 he opened the first free public school in Europe, and from it grew the Piarist Fathers, the first religious order devoted to teaching the young. In his old age he was falsely accused, deposed from the order he had founded, and saw it suppressed, yet he never uttered a word of complaint. Pope Pius XII named him universal patron of all Christian schools. Pray this novena for students and teachers, for the education and protection of children, for patience under injustice, and for the favor you most need.
