St. Margaret Clitherow Novena
St. Margaret Clitherow (c. 1556-1586) was a York butcher’s wife who converted at eighteen and turned her home into a refuge for hunted priests, with a hidden room and Mass said in secret. Arrested at last, she refused to enter a plea, knowing that without one there could be no trial, and that her children and servants would not be forced to give evidence against her. For that silence the law condemned her to be pressed to death, and she died under the weights on the twenty-fifth of March, 1586, calling on the name of Jesus. She is honoured as the Pearl of York.
