St. Raymond of Penafort Novena
St. Raymond of Penafort (1175-1275) was a Catalan nobleman and doctor of both laws who entered the Dominicans at forty-seven and became one of the great canonists of the Church. He compiled the Decretals of Gregory IX, wrote the first great manual for confessors, helped St. Peter Nolasco found the Mercedarians to ransom Christian captives from the Moors, and urged St. Thomas Aquinas to write the Summa contra Gentiles. When a king forbade any ship to carry him from Majorca, he spread his cloak upon the water and sailed home. He died at nearly one hundred years of age.
