St. Ignatius of Antioch Novena
St. Ignatius of Antioch was the third bishop of Antioch, where the disciples were first called Christians, and by ancient tradition a disciple of St. John the Apostle. Condemned under Trajan, he was taken across the empire in chains to be thrown to the beasts in Rome, and along the road he wrote seven letters that are among the oldest Christian writings outside the New Testament. He begged the Romans not to save him: I am the wheat of God, let me be ground by the teeth of the wild beasts, that I may be found the pure bread of Christ. Pray this novena against diseases of the throat, for the persecuted Church, for unity, and for the favor you most need.

On that road you did not complain but wrote to the churches, begging them to hold fast to the truth, to remain one, and to gather around the altar where the Eucharist is the very flesh of our Savior, the medicine of immortality. And when your friends in Rome would have saved your life, you begged them to let you go to God, saying that you were the wheat of God, and desired to be ground by the teeth of the beasts that you might be found the pure bread of Christ.
Obtain for us, we beg you, a faith like that, which does not bargain and does not draw back. Give us courage when confessing Christ is costly, patience under the small daily persecutions, and love for the Church even when her members wound us. Make us reverent before the Blessed Sacrament, and eager for the unity for which you spent your last breath pleading.
